There are so many different types of wedding venues in the Lake District how do you find the one that is perfect for you? The one that captures the essence of your love story, and provides the ideal setting for those authentic, natural moments you’ll cherish forever. I’ve put together a short guide on the best Lake District wedding venues that are available and have included some information on my favourite’s from a photographers point of view.
Embracing the Authentic Beauty of Lake District Wedding Venues
The Lake District is a treasure trove of natural beauty. Its landscapes are a blend of serene lakes, rugged mountains, and lush greenery. Choosing a wedding venue here means embracing this beauty. It means creating a wedding day that’s not just about the ceremony, but also about the experience of being in this remarkable place. It’s about capturing those candid moments against a backdrop that’s as unique and authentic as your love story. I absolutely love capturing couples in their environment and the Lake District is one of the best places in the Uk to capture those dramatic views.
Why Choose the Lake District for Your Wedding?
The Lake District is more than just a location. It’s a feeling, a mood, a setting that adds depth and texture to your wedding day. The natural landscapes here offer a sense of tranquility and romance that’s hard to find elsewhere. Choosing a Lake District wedding venue means you’re not just planning a wedding, but curating an experience. An experience that’s as much about the place as it is about the people, the moments, and the memories you’ll create.
The Charm of Seasons: When to Book Your Venue
The Lake District is a year-round destination, each season offering its unique charm. Spring and summer bring lush greenery and vibrant blooms, while autumn paints the landscape in warm, rich hues. Winter, on the other hand, wraps the region in a serene blanket of white, creating a magical backdrop for your wedding. When to book your venue depends on the season you prefer. Remember, popular venues can get booked up quickly, especially during peak wedding season. So, it’s always a good idea to plan well in advance.
What Type of Lake District wedding venue do you prefer?
There are such a variety of places to get married in the lake District. From grand country houses, to rustic barns and boutique hotels. If you really want to be emerged in nature you could even hike to the top of a mountain with just your absolutely favourite people for a ceremony on a dramatic peak with nothing but panoramic views! As a photographer I love these types of weddings with sweeping views so I’m totally happy to follow you up a mountain!
1. Country House Venues
The Lake District boasts a selection of exquisite country houses that provide a grand yet intimate setting for weddings. These venues often feature beautifully manicured gardens, elegant ballrooms, and luxurious accommodations for guests. Places like Hutton in the Forest and Cragwood Country House offer a blend of rustic charm and modern amenities, making them perfect for a romantic wedding. The countryside backdrop ensures breathtaking photographs, enhancing the wedding experience. I absolutely love Silverholme Manor. One of the venue’s standout features is its luxurious accommodation, offering the option for guests to stay overnight, with beautifully appointed rooms that provide comfort and style. It is also right on the shore of Lake Windermere and offers stunning views from the house.

2. Lakeside Venues
What could be more enchanting than a wedding by the water? Lakeside venues offer stunning views, tranquil surroundings, and a unique atmosphere. Venues like the Waterhead Hotel and Lakeside Hotel & Spa allow couples to say “I do” with the beautiful lakes as their backdrop. Many of these venues provide outdoor spaces for ceremonies, where couples can exchange vows surrounded by nature. I’m also particularly fond of the Inn on The Lake at Ullswater, it has incredible panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and lake, giving a prefect backdrop to your ceremony and reception.
3. Historic Venues
For couples looking to add a touch of history to their wedding, the Lake District offers a variety of historic venues. Castles and stately homes such as Muncaster Castle or Sizergh Castle provide a fairy-tale setting steeped in history and character. These venues often feature stunning architecture and expansive grounds, making them perfect for couples who want a grand celebration. On of my favourite historic wedding venues in the Lakes is Armathwaite Hall adjacent to Bassenthwaite Lake. It is a stunning stately home with Georgian and victorian architecture that dates back to the 16th century. I particularly enjoy covering bridal preparations on the roof terrace amongst the historic battlements.
4. Outdoor Venues
Embracing the stunning landscapes of the Lake District, outdoor venues are perfect for couples who adore nature and adventure. From lush gardens to rugged hillsides, the options are plentiful. Venues like Langdale Chase Hotel and The Towhead Estate which offers an outdoor terrace with spectacular views of Lake Windermere, allow couples to enjoy the breathtaking scenery while exchanging their vows. Additionally, some couples opt for more adventurous sites such as mountain tops or secluded glades, making their ceremony truly unique.
5. Barn and Farm Venues
Rustic charm is at the heart of barn and farm venues, which are ideal for couples looking for a laid-back, intimate atmosphere. Venues such as The Old Barn, Hidden River Cabins, Winder Hall, Low Hall, Ghyll Hall and Eden Barn provide idyllic surroundings with rustic decor that highlights the beauty of the countryside. These venues often come with ample space for outdoor celebrations, bonfires, and even on-site accommodations, which makes them a popular choice for destination weddings. One of my favourite barn venues is the Town Head Estate which also happens to be sat on the shores of Lake Windermere with fantastic views across the lake.
6. Boutique and Small Hotels
For an intimate wedding experience, boutique hotels offer a cozy atmosphere with personalized service. Places like The Belsfield or The Langdale Hotel provide exclusive use options that allow couples to celebrate with their closest family and friends. The ambiance of these hotels, along with their stunning locations, creates a warm and inviting space for an unforgettable wedding day. I also enjoyed covering a wedding at Lindeth Howe close to Lake windermere. It caters well for small wedding and has a lovely charming atmosphere and unique decor.
7. Modern Venues
For couples who prefer a contemporary twist to their wedding, modern venues provide sleek design and cutting-edge amenities. Venues like The Gilpin Hotel & Lake House offer a blend of modern luxury and natural beauty, with contemporary architecture set against the stunning Lake District scenery. These venues often provide a unique atmosphere that stands out from more traditional settings.
In summary, with its diverse range of wedding venues, the Lake District encapsulates romance and the beauty of nature, making it an ideal destination for couples to celebrate their love. Whether you dream of a grand country house, a serene lakeside ceremony, or a rustic barn wedding, the Lake District provides an unforgettable setting for your special day. As you explore your options, consider what suits your personal style and vision, and get ready for an enchanting wedding experience in this stunning part of England.
Making the Most of Your Venue: Tips and Ideas
Choosing your venue is just the first step. To truly make the most of it, consider the unique features and opportunities each venue offers. For instance, a lakeside venue might offer boat rides, while a rustic barn could be perfect for a bonfire evening. Remember, your venue is more than just a backdrop for your wedding. It’s a space for creating memories. So, think about how you can incorporate its unique features into your day. This will not only enhance your guests’ experience but also provide more opportunities for authentic, memorable photos.
Capturing Your Day: The Importance of Photography
Your wedding day will be filled with fleeting moments. A glance, a smile, a tear – these are the raw, authentic emotions that make your day unique. And it’s these moments that you’ll want to remember. That’s where the importance of photography comes in. A skilled photographer doesn’t just take photos, they capture the essence of your day, the atmosphere, the emotions. They tell your story through their lens. And when you’re getting married in a place as beautiful as the Lake District, you’ll want a photographer who can do justice to both your love story and the stunning scenery.
Choosing the Right Photographer for Your Lake District Wedding
Choosing the right photographer for your Lake District wedding is crucial. You need someone who is experienced capturing weddings in the Lakes in all landscapes, weathers and seasons. You also need someone who understands your vision, someone who can capture the natural beauty of the venue and the authentic moments of your day. As a photographer who specialises in documentary-style photography, this can be a great choice. I focus on capturing natural candid moments, rather than posed shots, which can result in a more authentic and personal wedding album. I do also love to provide a few creative WOW shots from your day, utilising beautiful light and colour and of course the stunning scenery. If you fancy getting married at the top of dramatic peak, I’ll bring my hiking boots!
