Thirsk Lodge Barns has to be one of my favourite wedding barns, it’s open and modern, yet cosy and warm with an elegant rustic feel. It is surrounded by acres of beautiful North Yorkshire countryside with fields of grass and wild flowers. It also has two lovely cottages onsite which are the perfect place for bridal parties to stay. I arrived to find Nicola and her bridesmaids getting ready in the farmhouse cottage. They were all in fantastic spirits and excited for the sunny wedding day ahead. It was also great to see one of my favourite makeup artists Danni Alexander Reading. I love the bridal prep part of the day. It’s a relaxed way to start the photography whilst getting to know the bride and bridal party a little and having a bit of banter with the suppliers. Once Nicola had had her make up applied she handed out some gifts to her bridesmaids much to their delight. Her father then came down to the cottage to greet his daughter and see her for the first time in her dress. I loved the happy smile on his face when he saw Nicola and gave her a big hug.
Meanwhile, the groom Paul and his groomsmen were getting ready in the laundry cottage and I popped over there to photograph them interacting and attaching their buttonholes before we walked over to the ceremony barn. Paul looked very dapper in his blue suit and just a little bit nervous as he waited for his bride. Soon it was time for the ceremony to begin and the barn doors opened at the bottom of the aisle. The bridesmaids walked in one by one in their lovely blush coloured dresses, followed by Nicola and her father. Nicola looked stunning in her bridal dress with lace detail as she walked up the aisle to her husband to be. Paul looked overjoyed to see her.
The ceremony went smoothly apart from the registrar getting the name of the groom wrong, much to everyones amusement! The couple walked out of the barn to much applause. We then lined up a confetti tunnel of guests in the courtyard and the couple were bombarded by a crowd of very enthusiastic confetti throwers. After a suitable amount of time had passed for canapés, champagne and congratulations I took a walk with the couple around the venue grounds for some natural couple portraits. We are lucky at Thirsk Lodge Barns as there are some many lovely natural backdrops for the photography and the poppy fields were also in full bloom with a spectacular display of flowers.
Next it was time for the wedding breakfast and the speeches. These went down so well with the guests as they were very entertaining with some competitions involved. At the end they had a paper plane making and throwing competition, which was definitely a first for me at a wedding, and great fun for the guests! For the evening reception everyone crowded back into the wedding barn . Paul and Nicola did a great job of whisking each other around the dancefloor for their first dance. Then the crowd joined them to rock the night away to a very fun and high energy band called the South West band. Before I left for the night I took a final stroll with the couple down the countryside lane next to the barn for some beautiful sunset pictures.
